How do our mielies grow?

The Mielie Food Garden project has really gained momentum. We have secured and fenced a piece of land in Khayelitsha and will soon start to plant our first seeds and seedlings. The idea is that for a little bit of effort INTO the garden, each the Mielie weaver will be able to enjoy a balanced diet OUT OF the garden. We plan to sell the surplus to other members of the community and also at our Friday morning Organic Market at Montebello. At the moment we are selling produce from another community food garden in Khayelitsha at our Friday Market. In the interim, we have been arming ourselves with knowledge by studying other community food projects as well as attending the awesome Soil for Life course, offered by the one and only Pat Featherstone. If you live in Cape Town and want to learn how to build healthy soil so that you can plant nutritious veggies, I can highly recommend this weekend course. Visit www.soilforlife.co.za to find out more about this wonderful organisation.
